Female inmate dies in county’s custody

Published:

An inmate who fell ill in the women’s wing of the Hernando County Detention Center later died after medical staffers and rescuers were not able to revive her.

After taking a hot shower Wednesday, Jessica Nichole Dixon, 27, complained to other inmates that she was having trouble breathing, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Denise Moloney. At 9:55 p.m. Dixon was taken to the jail’s medical area.

Dixon appeared to be hyperventilating and was cool and clammy to the touch, Moloney said. A jail physician determined she was seriously ill and needed to be taken immediately by ambulance to a hospital.

Hernando County Fire/Rescue officials took Dixon to Bayfront Health-Brooksville, where she was pronounced dead at 11:17 p.m. Wednesday, Moloney said.

An autopsy concluded Dixon died of pulmonary embolus and infective endocarditis. Relatives told authorities Dixon had a long history of IV drug abuse, Moloney said.

The case was closed with Dixon’s death listed as natural.
