Steak shoot, dinner

BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville Elks Lodge No. 2582, 14494 Cortez Blvd., will hold its next Steak Shoot and Spaghetti dinner from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. The cost is $8 per card. Following the game a spaghetti dinner will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. for $6 per person. For more information call (352) 596-2582.

Art gallery open house

The Gallery of the Arts & Antiques, 259 Howell Ave., Brooksville, will have a grand opening porch party starting at 2 p.m. The talents of 28 artists will be on exhibit, as well as a 50-page history of the 102-year-old house. Refreshments will be served by The Southern Ladies and a Gent. The event is free; donations are welcome. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Mermaid Enounter

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 6131 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, is offering a "Mermaid Encounter" for children between the ages of 3 and 14. Children will spend 20-minute with one of Weeki Wachee's live mermaids in the "Mermaid Lagoon" at Buccaneer Bay. There will be two sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. The first session starts at 3:30 p.m. and is for children between 3 and 6 years old. The second session starts at 4:30 p.m. and is for children between the ages of 7 and 14. The cost is $75. Botanist program

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will sponsor a free program titled "How to sprout a budding botanist" at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Hernando County Mining Association Enrichment Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville. The program is geared toward educators, parents, grandparents and camp counselors. The program will be taught by Karen Fraley, who has spent the last 30 years walking local trails. She has a degree in horticulture and is a certified Florida master naturalist. For more information, visit

BROOKSVILLE - Monster Transmission's charity cruise-in will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Chick-fil-A, 13143 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. This month's cruise-in benefits the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Call (800) 708-0087, ext. 4491.
