Open debate needed on whether to back drone-testing program

Published:

The issue: Whether a drone program is needed in Hernando County.

Our opinion: A discussion based in fact is needed in public prior to making an informed decision.

In the words of Sgt. Joe Friday, all we want are the facts.

It was not a very well-thought-out decision refusing to support an application for the possible testing of drones at the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport

At the very least there should have been a detailed discussion of the proposal with all the known facts laid out in the open.

However, the proposal never got that far as discussion was summarily cut off with commissioners not being able to voice their opinions based on fact.

There is a danger when the government refuses to air, for public debate, any issues that could be significant as this one which involves the possibility of jobs and new businesses.

What is known and what is not known about the issue is the root of the problem. Too many times the hysteria of emotion rules the day, only too often to be refuted on a later day.

That of course would not help the proposal at hand as usually the time element has expired in which to take action.

There may very well be considerations relating to safety and privacy as some claim, but again that has to be backed up with facts. Whether or not county commissioners endorse the proposal is not the real issues but giving the proposal a fair and open discussion is!
