Butterfly census

BROOKSVILLE - The monthly butterfly census will start at 9 a.m. Friday at the Chinsegut Conservation Center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, Brooksville. Bev Hansen will lead the survey and teach participants to indentify butterfly species using binoculars. For information call (352) 754-6722.

Former mermaids

WEEKI WACHEE - Weeki Wachee Springs State Park will host a "Former Mermaid Performance" on Sunday and Monday at the park, 5131 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee.

Former mermaids will take to the water for various performances over the two days. Admission to the park, which includes Buccaneer Bay, is $13 for adults and $ 8 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Children age 5 and under are free. For information call (352) 592-5656.

Machine gun shoot

The Hernando Sportsman's Club will host a machine gun shoot from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the club on U.S. 19, 9 1/2 miles north of State Road 50. The cost is $20 per shooter. There is a $2 entrance fee for all spectators over the age of 15

Charity cruise-in

BROOKSVILLE - The Monster Transmission/Chick-fil-A charity cruise in will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Chick-fil-A parking lot, 13143 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. This month's cruise in will benefit the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind of Hernando County. Family circus

BROOKSVILLE - The Loomis Brothers Circus will perform on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 6 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 Broad St., Brooksville. There will be two performances each day, one at 4:30 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature acrobats, elephants, clowns, tigers, camels, trapeze artists and much more. Doors open one hour before show time. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for children age 12 and under with paying adults; limit two children per adult. Mermaid Encounter

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 6131 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, is offering a "Mermaid Encounter" for children between the ages of 3 and 14. Children will spend 20 minutes with one of Weeki Wachee's live mermaids in the "Mermaid Lagoon" at Buccaneer Bay. There will be two sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. The first session starts at 3:30 p.m. and is for children between 3 and 6 years old. The second session starts at 4:30 p.m. and is for children between the ages of 7 and 14. The cost is $75. Coming up

Sept. 11 ceremony

VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, Spring Hill, will host a Sept. 11 memorial service at the post. The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. Guests are asked to bring their own chairs. The event is sponsored by the Retired NYC Firefighters of Spring Hill, Chapter 343 and VFW Post 10209.

Fall festival

The Korean War Veterans Legion No. 5053 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual Fall Festival on Sept. 29 at VFW Post No. 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, Spring Hill. The festival will feature a performance by Gypsy Star, an American gypsy concert band. Door open at 1:30 p.m. There will be a social hour 2-3 p.m. A buffet-style dinner by John Mason Catering will be served 3-4:15 p.m. The concert will follow 4:30-6 p.m. The cost is $20 per person.
