Mermaid calendar signing

There will be a special mermaid calendar signing from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the fountain, located at the main entrance of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 6131 Commercial Way, Spring Hill. It is a 16-month calendar that starts with September 2013 and run through December 2014. Famed photographer Andrew Brusso will also be in attendance at the signing. The price of this limited-edition calendar is only $20. The Weeki Wachee Mermaid calendar will go on sale online beginning July 27 at www.merstarworld.com. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

Wildlife program

A "Children in the Wild Series: Tracks" will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chinsegut Conservation Center, 23212 Lake Lindsay Road, Brooksville. The program is for children ages 3 to 7. Children will participate in hands-on activities, crafts and more as they explore their own tracks. Call (352) 754-6722.

Sheriff's Office bowling extravaganza

SPRING HILL - The 13th annual Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services Bowling Extravaganza is scheduled for Saturday. Registration begins at noon and bowling begins at 1 p.m. It is an annual event, hosted at Spring Hill Lanes. The tournament proceeds will support Sheriff's Summer R.O.A.R. (Respect Others And YouRself) Day Camps, the Richard Buckingham Community Service Scholarship and the "In honor of Richard B. Nugent" Community Service Scholarship. The program is funded through contributions from citizens and businesses.

Flea market at airport

BROOKSVILLE/SPRING HILL - The Airport Flea Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, located at 17375 Spring Hill Drive. One hundred vendors offer everything from housewares, tools, collectibles and cosmetics, to craft items, recreational items and farm-fresh goodies. Call (352) 796-0268.

Butterfly census

BROOKSVILLE - There will be a butterfly census day from 9 to 11 a.m. July 26 at the Chinsegut Conservation Center, 23212 Lake Lindsay Road, Brooksville. Volunteer Bev Hansen will lead the survey and will teach participants to identify butterfly species using binoculars. Hansen is one of the best birders in the county, so you may learn some birding skills too. The butterfly census is held the last Friday of the month. Call (352) 754-6722.

Botanist program

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will sponsor a free program titled "How to sprout a budding botanist" at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Hernando County Mining Association Enrichment Center, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville. The program is geared toward educators, parents, grandparents and camp counselors. The program will be taught by Karen Fraley, who has spent the last 30 years walking local trails. Charity cruise-in

BROOKSVILLE - Monster Transmission's charity cruise-in will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Chick-fil-A, 13143 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. This month's cruise-in benefits the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI. For more information, call (800) 708-0087, ext. 4491.
