Ham Radio Field Day

BROOKSVILLE - Spring Hill Amateur Radio Club (SHARC) members will demonstrate their wireless communications skills and equipment during the annual nationwide emergency communications test that will run from 2 p.m. Saturday through 2 p.m. Sunday.

Known as Ham Radio Field Day, SHARC will operate multiple short wave radio stations powered by solar panels, storage batteries, and emergency generators at the Oak Hill Hospital Partners Club, 11375 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. Admission is free.

Each year during the event, SHARC hams set up their radios at various local emergency locations to talk with and send messages wirelessly to other hams across the United States. Hams are volunteers licensed by the FCC and have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and equipment to provide their services at no cost to government agencies like the sheriff's office and fire rescue within Hernando County, emergency agencies within the State of Florida, to the regional hospitals and the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the National Weather Service because of disasters or when normal communication systems do not work or are overloaded. Spider web wonders

BROOKSVILLE - The Florida Wildlife Commission will host a "Children in the wild series: Spider web wonders" 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Chinsegut Conservation Center, 23212 Lake Lindsay Road, Brooksville.

Children will learn about the world or orb weavers, funnel spiders and other spiders through classroom and outdoor activities, games crafts and story time. The program is designed for children ages 3 to 7. Preregistration is required. For more information, call (352) 754-6722 or visit .Chinsegut.

Flea market

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Fairgrounds hosts an indoor and outdoor flea market every weekend beginning at 9 a.m. at 6436 Broad St. For information, call (352) 796-4552.

Airport flea market

BROOKSVILLE/SPRING HILL - The Airport Flea Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, located at 17375 Spring Hill Drive.

One hundred vendors offer everything from housewares, tools, collectibles and cosmetics, to craft items, recreational items and farm goodies. Call (352) 796-0268.

'Fiddler' auditions

BROOKSVILLE - The Live Oak Theatre Company will hold auditions for its upcoming musical "Fiddler on the Roof" at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, June 25 and 27, at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 200 Mount Fair Ave., Brooksville. Those who audition should come prepared to sing and act. Songs from the show are not necessary. Be prepared to sing 16 bars that show your vocal range and strengths and also be prepared to recite a monologue. However, callbacks will require songs from the show. Therefore, those who audition should be familiar with the music and should come prepared with sheet music or CD accompaniment. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 18, 19, 25, 26 and 27. All performances will be held at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Brooksville.

Spaghetti fundraiser

BROOKSVILLE - Representatives with the Eckerd Youth Challenge program in conjunction with the Community Advisory Council of Hernando County will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser 3:30-7 p.m. Thursday, June 27 at the Eckerd facility, 201 Culbreath Road, Brooksville. A $10 donation is suggested. The Eckerd Youth Challenge program is designed to help troubled youths gain the skills and confidence needed to navigate the difficult road from adolescence to adulthood. 4-H auction

BROOKSVILLE - The Jolly Ranchers 4-H Auction to raise funds for a trip to Washington, D.C. will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, Brooksville.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature live entertainment from Brian Chytka as well as door prizes, raffles and a silent auction. A steak dinner with green beans, butter potatoes, corn, rolls, salad, dessert and drinks will be served. The cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under.

Quilt show

BROOKSVILLE - Opening Day for the 2013 Annual Quilt Show will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Hernando Heritage Museum, 601 Museum Court, Brooksville.

All quilts will be on display through July. Quilts may be entered for display through June 25. There will be a "Quilting Bee" from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $12 per person and includes a box lunch and a house tour. At noon, there will be a "Trunk Show" by Brenda Grampsas. At 1 p.m., there will be a lecture on the history of sew machines by Linda Wade, of Treadle Treasures. From noon to 3 p.m., house tours will be offered. For more information, call (352) 688-6504.
