Under the Big Top

BROOKSVILLE The Loomis Brothers Circus will perform today at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 Broad St., Brooksville. There will be two performances, one at 4:30 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature acrobats, elephants, clowns, tigers, camels, trapeze artists, and much more. Doors open one hour before show time. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for children age 12 and under with paying adults; limit two children per adult. Big Band Bash

SPRING HILL The Hernando Jazz Society will present a "Big Band Bash" starting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wellington Club House, 400 Wexford Blvd., Spring Hill. The event will feature the Hernando Jazz All Stars. A buffet will be available for $6.99. The event is free to members and $10 for nonmembers or $15 for a couple. 9/11 memorial service

SPRING HILL VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, Spring Hill, will host a Sept. 11 memorial service on Sept. 11 at the post. The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. Guests are asked to bring their own chairs. The event is sponsored by the Retired NYC Firefighters of Spring Hill, Chapter 343 and VFW Post 10209.

9/11 Run to Remember

SPRING HILL The annual 9/11 Run to Remember will start at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hernando County YMCA, 1300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. The event features a 5K run or 1-mile walk. Prizes will be awarded to the top times. There is no cost to participate but registration is required.

Art gallery open house

BROOKSVILLE The Gallery of the Arts & Antiques, 259 Howell Ave., Brooksville, will have a grand opening porch party starting at 2 p.m. The talents of 28 artists will be on exhibit, as well as a 50-page history of the 102-year-old house. Refreshments will be served by The Southern Ladies and a Gent. The event is free; donations are welcome. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call (352) 754-8509.

Mermaid Encounter

WEEKI WACHEE Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 6131 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, is offering a "Mermaid Encounter" for children between the ages of 3 and 14. Children will spend 20-minute with one of Weeki Wachee's live mermaids in the "Mermaid Lagoon" at Buccaneer Bay. There will be two sessions on Saturdays and Sundays. The first session starts at 3:30 p.m. and is for children between 3 and 6 years old. The second session starts at 4:30 p.m. and is for children between the ages of 7 and 14. The cost is $75. Flea market at airport

NRA fundraiser banquet

BROOKSVILLE Hernando County Friends of NRA will have a fundraiser banquet and auction starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 200 Mt. Fair Ave., Brooksville. Friends of NRA is a grassroots event that supports thousands of community service programs related to firearm safety and education, hunter safety, wildlife conservation, gun range improvements, youth marksmanship, youth shooting clubs, JROTC units, law enforcement, and other shooting interests. This event will feature both a live and silent auction, door prizes, and game tables for a chance to win more prizes. Attendees also have a chance to win a drawing for a Thompson Tommy Gun with violin case, a Smith and Wesson Governor pistol that shoots both .45 caliber pistol cartridges and .410 shotgun shells, and a TriStar Tec-12 shotgun. Kiwanis golf fundraiser

BROOKSVILLE The Kiwanis Club Spring Hill will host the 8th Annual Children's Charity Golf Invitational on Sept. 14 at Southern Hills Plantation Club, 4200 Summit View Drive, Brooksville. The event will benefit the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties. Special guest will include the Weeki Wachee Springs mermaids. Registration and a light lunch will be at 11 a.m. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. An awards presentation, buffet dinner and silent auction will follow. Car museum tour

ODESSA Cook's Antique & Classic Car Museum Tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 22 at Component General Inc., 2445 Success Drive, Odessa. Jim Cook will host the third annual family-friendly open house, which benefits the Foundation for Early Learning in Pasco and Hernando Counties Inc., raising awareness about the 501(c)(3) nonprofit group aimed at quality early childhood education. This is no ordinary museum tour or awareness event; although it holds some of America's rarest collectibles, it is 100-percent family friendly and 100-percent free for everyone. Last year, 580 families visited Cook's facility to experience the progress of American culture and hear the history behind automobiles from 1915 to 1986. There also is a collection of antique radios, cameras and other items of interest from throughout the years. Free refreshments popcorn, ice cream, water, soda, cookies and cake will be served.

YMCA arts and craft festival

SPRING HILL The Hernando County Family YMCA will host its 5th annual Arts and Crafts Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are available and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Indoor tables are $45; outdoor spaces are $55, and larger spaces for food vendors are available for a percentage of sales. All proceeds from tables and spaces will be donated to the 2013 Community Support Fund. National Public Lands Day

WEEKI WACHEE The Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is recruiting volunteers for National Public Lands Day on Sept. 29 at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. Volunteers are needed for invasive plant removal, trail maintenance and general park cleanup. Trail maintenance volunteers need to bring a lopper or pruning saw. Suggested attire for the cleanup includes closed-toe shoes, gloves, a water bottle and sunscreen or insect repellent. For information call (352) 592-5656.

Fall festival

SPRING HILL The Korean War Veterans Legion No. 5053 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual Fall Festival on Sept. 29 at VFW Post No. 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, Spring Hill. The festival will feature a performance by Gypsy Star an American gypsy concert band. Door open at 1:30 p.m. There will be a social hour 2-3 p.m. A buffet-style dinner by John Mason Catering will be served 3-4:15 p.m. The concert will follow 4:30-6 p.m. The cost is $20 per person.
