Labor Day 5K

Enjoy the shade of the Withlacoochee State Forest on Saturday as you compete in a timed race at the Red Mule Runners Labor Day 5K at McKethan Lake Park, 15185 Broad St., U.S. 41. Registration is at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. Enjoy DJ entertainment and refreshments after the race. Awards will be given to first through third place in various age divisions, and first through fifth for the 14 to 19 age group.

‘Forever Plaid’ finale

The Show Palace’s production of the musical “Forever Plaid,” the story of a singing quartet killed in a 1950s car accident who return to Earth to retell their stories while performing ’50s classics, wraps up its run this weekend. 5K Walk fundraiser

Hernando County Association of Realtors hosts a 5K Walk for Weekend Blessings from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill. This walk-a-thon fundraiser will benefit People Helping People in Hernando County.

Football kickoff party

Help kick off the college football season at the 2014 College Football Kickoff party from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville. Dress in your favorite college gear for a full evening of fun including a barbecue, corn hole toss, raffle for a TV, 50.50 drawing, door prizes, cold beer and music. Arc Nature Coast has Summer Sizzler

Arc Nature Coast will have a Summer Sizzler from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Arc Nature Coast Education Center, 6495 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. The cost is $5 per person and includes pizza, beverage and snack. Parents, volunteers and children under 10 are free. Dance and party with music by PJ the DJ Lobato. The Arc Nature Coast provides services and activities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

West Hernando Little League will hold registrations for players age 4 to 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Aug. 29, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and on Aug. 30 at the Hernando Little League Complex, 2313 Founder Road, Spring Hill. VFW hosts twice-monthly steak shoots

Free belly dance class offered every month

A free belly dance class is offered the last Wednesday of the month, sponsored by the Hernando County Recreation Department and Instructor, Jaynellen. The class is at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 24 at the Hernando County Recreation Center, 205 E. Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville. This class will introduce you to the basics, provide you with a brief history along with the different styles of the art. Open to all ages, body types and skill levels. County offers Rain Barrel Workshop

Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping program presents a Rain Barrel Workshop from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Hernando County Extension office, 1653 Blaise Drive, Brooksville. The cost is $65, which includes one 65-gallon rain barrel per household. Hernando County Utilities customers will receive a $25 credit on their water bill. Class size is limited and attendees must pre-pay to ensure availability of a rain barrel.

Sportsman’s Club has Marksmanship Clinic

Hernando County Sportsman’s Club will offer the Project Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic on Aug. 30 and 31 at the club, 16121 Commercial Way, Brooksville. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the clinic is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The clinic fees are $60 for adults and $20 for youth under 18. Active duty military, law enforcement officers with ID and elected officials are free. Additional club range fees of $14 per day apply for adults and children age 12 and older. Greek Story Time at The Olive Grove

Head out for Greek Story Time and learn about Greek Mythology every Saturday at 11 a.m. at The Olive Grove, 15016 Rester Drive, Brooksville, starting Sept. 6. The cost is $10 which includes a healthy snack and a free olive tree. Workshops for September are as follows:

◆ Sept. 6 and 7, make olive oil soap from scratch, cost is $20.

◆ Sept. 13, make all natural olive oil hand and dish soap, cost is $10.

◆ Sept. 14, make laundry soap.

◆ Sept. 20, make all natural olive oil shampoo, cost is $10.

◆ Sept. 21, make all natural conditioner, cost is $10.
