Charity poker run

VFW 9236 Men’s Auxiliary presents the Justin Coleman 9/11 Memorial Poker Run on Saturday at 3435 Shoal Line Blvd., Hernando Beach. The run starts at 10 a.m. and last motorcycle in is at 4:30 p.m. The cost to enter is a $10 donation and additional hands are $10. Entry includes biscuits and gravy at 8 a.m. and hamburgers and hot dogs after the run. All proceeds support charities of the VFW Men’s Auxiliary. Library celebrates

After a long year of cleaning and refurbishing, the East Branch Hernando Library plans a ceremony to celebrate its reopening at 10 a.m. Saturday at 6457 Windmere Road in Brooksville. The library was shuttered in July 2013 due to arson, and the public is invited to share the reopening celebration, tour the building, learn about library services and play library trivia for prizes.

Ultimate Rat Pack

Sept. 11 remembrance

FDNY and NYPD retirees of Hernando County present their annual Sept. 11 remembrance, “Never Forget,” at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, Spring Hill. There will be a viewing of the Sept. 11 memorial followed by the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be available.

Saturday dance has Western theme

Brookridge Social Dance Group hosts a Western-themed dance from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St., Brooksville. Admission is $5 per person at the door with music by Starburst. Bring your own refreshments. Greek Story Time at The Olive Grove

Head out for Greek Story Time and learn about Greek Mythology every Saturday at 11 a.m. at The Olive Grove, 15016 Rester Drive, Brooksville, starting Sept. 6. The cost is $10 which includes a healthy snack and a free olive tree. Workshops for September are as follows:

◆ Saturday and Sunday make olive oil soap from scratch, cost is $20.

◆ Sept. 13, make all natural olive oil hand and dish soap, cost is $10.

◆ Sept. 14, make laundry soap.

◆ Sept. 20, make all natural olive oil shampoo, cost is $10.

◆ Sept. 21, make all natural conditioner, cost is $10.

◆ Sept. 27, paint sand dollars, cost is $5.

◆ Sept. 28, make an ancient style clay olive oil lamp, cost is $5.

Church to screen environmental film

Unitarian Universalist Church of Brooksville invites you to the first event in its free 2014-2015 First Sunday program series with a showing of the award winning movie, “Gasland Part II” at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brooksville Woman’s Club, 131 S. Jazz Society kicks off new season

Hernando Jazz Society opens its 2014/2015 season with a program called “Big Band Bash at the Wellington” at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Wellington Clubhouse, 400 Wexford Blvd., Spring Hill. Enjoy a nostalgic afternoon of music from the Big Band Era. Admission for non-members is $10 per person or $15 per couple and HJS members are admitted free.
