July 4 parade

The High Point Community’s Fourth of July Parade kicks off at 8:30 a.m. today near the guard house at the entrance to High Point, off Cortez Boulevard. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and will follow High Point Boulevard to Club House Road, ending at the community center, where there will be a flag-raising ceremony with American Legion Post 186. Cash awards will be given in several categories.

Machine Gun Shoot

Hernando Sportsman’s Club conducts a Machine Gun Shoot at 9:30 a.m. today at its facility at 16121 Commercial Way, Brooksville. Entry fee is $20 per machine gun shooter. No tracers or incendiary ammo is allowed and shooters must be 18 years old. Admission for spectators is $2 per person and children under 15 are admitted free with an adult. Bring eye and ear protection, even if you are a spectator. Some rental machine guns will be available from vendors. Food and soft drinks will be available for purchase in the clubhouse.

Steak shoot and dinner

Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582 will have a Steak Shoot and Dinner starting at 3 p.m. Saturday at the lodge, 14474 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.

A Steak Shoot is similar to a three-card bingo game in which the player can win a 1-pound sirloin steak. The game will be followed by a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. and karaoke at 7 p.m.

Politics in the Park

Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce’s Government Affairs Committee will host Politics in the Park from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Knights of Columbus, 10470 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. This old-fashioned political rally is your opportunity to meet local, state and federal candidates and discuss important election issues facing our community. Free Jazzercise classes offered

Jazzercise hosts its sixth annual “Americana” Jazzercise classes at 9 and 10 a.m. today at 7257 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. The hour-long classes are free and open to the public. Highlights include door prizes and giveaways and the collection of donated items to be given to local non-profit organization Gifts from Home, which sends boxes to the troops overseas. Church has July 4th Family Fun Day

Grace World Outreach Church is sponsoring its second annual July 4th Family Fun Day Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Tom Varn Park, 601 Darby Lane in Brooksville. All ages are welcome for free food, face painting, balloon twisting and live music. The event takes place next to the pond.

The Friends of Weeki Wachee State Park present a special evening event for the family, the third Family Beach Bash, from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 19 at Buccaneer Bay, 6131 Commercial Way, Spring Hill. Admission is $5 per person and ages 2 and under are free.

The Beach Bashes feature water fun, hula-hoop contest, spin-it-to-win-it game and food at family-friendly prices. Proceeds benefit park improvements.
