Happy Fourth of July

Published:

Today we celebrate Independence Day a milestone in the progress of mankind.

It began the American experiment in democracy and the rule of law and not of men. The Founders sorted through all the great sages of time and their thoughts on the governance of a free people and incorporating those eternal truths gave birth to this great nation.

The Declaration of Independence is more that a literary masterpiece it lays out the reasons that the colonies had for the establishment of a new and independent country. It is frightening sometime to think of how brilliant the Founders really were as they devised a system of government that was of the people and not by a ruling class.

The system of checks and balances as enshrined in the Constitution is unique in the entire world. However, I wonder what the Founders would respond to what the country has devolved to. No longer is principle the dominant factor in politics as we now have replaced principle with the lust for power and the country be damned.

Privilege has been established for the governing class as they have established everything from a gym, barber shop, a separate health care package, a lavish retirement system, special parking among other benefits and perks. These were not the trappings of power that the Founders envisioned but rather the fulfillment of the adage regarding power corrupting the individual.

What is missing today in most of our "public servants" is that it is not what is good for the country but rather what is good for them. Too many have entered public service only to enrich themselves and end up wealthier than the day then began their terms of office.

They commit wanton acts of misconduct only to get a slap on the wrist and then double talk to the press and the public. That brings up another issue of our lack of principle and that is the free press of this country have completely abandoned their responsibility to be the watchdog over government but rather have become the lap dog of government.

They have lost their objectivity and instead report according to their own particular political viewpoint. They are, in my mind, guilty of the greater sin of indifference to those who commit the true transgressions that undermine this great nation.

Sorry to say but both parties are equally guilty of bad governance it may be time for the emergence of another political party such as the Tea Party, that was responsible for the conservative gains in 2010, to take the lead. It may take several election cycles but a renaissance of political purity must be the goal to restore conservative Constitutional government. Have a great Fourth of July!
