National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday

Published:

On Tuesday, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) with a 50-state effort to register voters.

Although we do not have any elections in Hernando County in 2013, the Hernando County Supervisor of Elections (SOE) office is participating in this national effort to register voters. National Voter Registration Day is a collaborative effort by a group of nonprofits: Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance Education Fund, Bus Federation Civic Fund, Fair Elections Legal Network (FELN), League of Women Voters, Nonprofit Vote and Voto Latino.

It started with the idea that a national day revolving around voter registration would help increase access to voter registration, and get people talking about their civic duty to vote in a fun, nonpartisan way. Last year, more than 1,000 groups participated in National Voter Registration Day, and this year almost 800 groups have already signed up including the Hernando County Supervisor of Elections office.

National Voter Registration Day is about helping people find their voice. It's not about partisan politics; it's a way we can work together for the common good-registering people to vote.

I am pleased to announce that both major political parties are joining forces with the Supervisor of Elections office on Tuesday.

With a limited staff I realized it would be a great opportunity to partner with Republicans and Democrats to help the SOE Team Promote the Vote in Hernando County.

This is an opportunity for us to put aside our differences and celebrate one of our most basic rights- the right to vote. Voting is something that unites us all as Americans!

Registering to vote is the first step in making sure your voice is heard.

Since taking office in January 2013, the Supervisor of Elections office has conducted more than 30 voter registration drives. This includes the Hernando County Fair, Swamp Fest, car shows, churches and schools. If your group or organization would like to have a voter registration drive, please contact our office.

This is also a good opportunity to remind currently registered voters of the need to update their voter's information. The next election is less than a year away - (Aug. 26, 2014), so we need to work hard to make sure our voter rolls are as accurate as possible.

This includes updating your signature! Please ask yourself - has my signature changed?

When you return an absentee ballot or sign a petition, your signature is verified against the signature we have on file. If the signatures do not match, your absentee ballot may not be counted or your petition may not be accepted. To update your signature stop by one of the voter registration drives listed below, or visit www.hernandovotes.com and click on Register to Vote.

Please join us on Tuesday to make sure you are a registered voter and the information we have on file is accurate and up to date.
