Published:

SPRING HILL - The Hernando Audubon Society will offer the 2014 Stephen B. Fickett Memorial Environmental Scholarship of $1,000, and the Andy Maywalt Memorial Scholarship of $500 for qualifying Hernando County high school graduates.

Seniors planning careers in the natural or earth Sciences, and students who have participated in environmental clubs are encouraged by the society to apply for the scholarships.

Hernando Audubon Society offers an annual scholarship in memory of Steve Fickett, a founding member of the society who played a leadership role for many years as an officer of the organization, field trip leader, and organizer of the Christmas Bird Count, according to the society.

This year Hernando Audubon Society is also offering a one-time scholarship in memory of Andy Maywalt that was funded by donations from friends.

Andy was a member of the society for more than 25 years, and he and his wife, Elaine, were instrumental in establishing, funding, and promoting the Fickett Scholarship, according to the society.

Application details are available at www.hernandoaudubon.org or from high school guidance offices, according to the society, and applications must be postmarked no later than April 4.
