BROOKSVILLE - The dogs and cats looked just like the others in kennels at Hernando County Animal Services. But their story was different.

On Tuesday, 50 cats and three dogs were pulled out of a U-Haul trailer parked in the Publix parking lot at Mariner and County Line Road in Spring Hill.

Law enforcement and animal services were called after animals were heard "screaming" inside the hot and abandoned trailer belonging to Frances Terry Evans, 52, of Pasco County, according to the sheriff's office.

Pasco County officials believed Evans has abandoned them in the parking lot because of an active animal hoarding case against her, which required she turn the animals over that day.

Many animals were found inside plastic containers, according to a Hernando County Sheriff's Office press release.

Evans arrived with Pasco County law enforcement at animal services Tuesday and surrendered her animals.

Animal Services staff evaluated the animals on Tuesday and were still working their way through treating the animals on Wednesday. Of the 50 cats, 39 were euthanized due to their poor health.

Additional charges are pending against Evans.
