Brooksville man arrested on child abuse charges, deputies say

BROOKSVILLE – A Brooksville man was arrested on child abuse charges Tuesday after causing significant injuries to a child he was caring for, deputies said.

According to a Hernando County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, Cory McKenna told law enforcement he was tired and the child, along with two other children, were acting up.

McKenna, 24, said he grabbed the child from the floor and hit him multiple times on the buttocks.

“He said that he was swinging in such a way that his whole arm may have struck him in the back as well,” the report shows.

McKenna told investigators “he wasn’t aware of his own strength,” and he might have hit the child hard enough for it to appear he was beaten with an object, according to the report.

McKenna was arrested on charges of child abuse (without great bodily harm), and released on $5,000 bail the same day. He is set to be arraigned on May 20.
