A Brooksville woman was charged with animal neglect after deputies found her living in deplorable conditions in a tent with her cats.

Deputies responding to the Hidden Valley Campground, 22329 Cortez Blvd. (lot 54) on Wednesday found Susan Kay living in a tent on an overgrown lot.

Deputies say an Airstream camper, also on the lot, was infested with rats and insects.

Kay was living in a 10-foot by 10-foot tent, which was overrun with the smell of urine and feces, deputies say.

Inside the tent were about 18 cats and one parakeet, deputies say. The cats were kept in several metal cages that were piled with newspapers and feces.

An Animal Services Officer removed the animals, and Kay signed a release for all the animals, deputies say.

Kay faces 18 counts of animal neglect.
