BROOKSVILLE — The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a person who has called county residents and tried to steal money and debit card information by identifying himself as a sheriff’s deputy.

A male caller identifying himself as Hernando Sheriff’s Lt. John Martin called several county residents, saying that someone in the household would be held in contempt of court, and a bench warrant issued, if the caller was not immediately paid $1,300, according to the sheriff’s office.

The agency does not employ a Lt. John Martin and said that the caller, who asked people for cash and a Green Dot debit card, was operating a scam.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hernando sheriff’s office at (352) 754-6830.
