Ex-manager gets probation

Published:

BROOKSVILLE - A former apartment manager, who pocketed rent money and security deposits, was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation.

Donna Lopez, 46, was arrested in late March after property owner Robert Buckner learned she had been renting out Oak Park Apartments, at 460 Hale Ave., without his knowledge and keeping nearly $5,000 for herself.

Lopez admitted to taking the money between October 2012 and March 2013 during an interview with law enforcement.

Lopez also must pay restitution to Buckner, but because she believes her former employer owes her salary money, Judge Anthony Tatti set the restitution hearing off by 60 days.

With the salary money as credit toward her restitution, Lopez believes she'll have to pay less than the $4,952.50 currently owed.

Lopez entered a no contest plea, and had her adjudication withheld. Lopez's attorney, Michael Lamberti, said this was her first felony.

Lopez will also need to complete 40 hours of community service.

The grand theft charge, a third-degree felony, is punishable by up to five years in prison or a $5,000 fine.
