Felon found with gun in car

Published:

WEEKI WACHEE - A Brooksville man was arrested Tuesday night after deputies found a gun in his Ford Expedition.

The sheriff's office received an anonymous tip that the SUV driven by James John Crockett, 31, had drugs inside.

Crockett later allowed law enforcement to search his vehicle, and a .25 caliber handgun and paraphernalia were found.

The man said he didn't know the gun was in the SUV, but another passenger told police Crockett said he'd get in trouble if found with the firearm because he was recently released from prison.

A background check by the deputy found Crockett has been convicted of three felonies for a traffic charge, battery and dealing in stolen property.

After being arrested, Crockett said he did know about the gun and that it was not loaded or fitted with the correct magazine.

Jail records show Crockett was booked on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon and he continues to be held on $10,000 bond.
