BROOKSVILLE -

Jami White’s hands are burned and his heart is heavy. But his family is alive.

On Friday morning, a fire ripped through the family’s mobile home on Star Road in Brooksville, not far from Sunshine Grove Road.

The family wouldn’t have been so lucky if White’s 3-year-old daughter hadn’t woken up and alerted the rest of the family. One of White’s sons has burns on his hands and feet from going back in to save the family’s two big dogs.

White said on Tuesday he “feels for his kids,” who lost their toys and possessions in the fire. A teddy bear, covered in soot, lies on the front porch; a single Xbox controller is discarded in front of the house.

Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the blaze just past 7 a.m. and just minutes after the alarm went out. All of the family members were out of the house, according to the report, and damages were estimated at $60,000.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and started by a lighter, according Hernando County Fire Rescue report.

White said that for now, he’s sleeping at the property to prevent looting. His wife and children are staying with family.
