Former Hernando commissioner Rose Rocco joins house race

SPRING HILL - Former Hernando County Commissioner Rose Rocco has announced she will run for the District 35 Florida House of Representatives seat.

"We need a representative whose motivation for seeking the seat is not driven by what's best for Tallahassee but, rather, the desire to serve the people as a public servant," Rocco said in her campaign announcement on Friday.

Rocco, who lives in Spring Hill, said she is an insurance reform advocate, and understands the need for education and job opportunities in Hernando.

Rocco, a Democrat, served as a county commissioner from 2006 to 2010, and lost her bid for a second term to Republican Wayne Dukes.

The District 35 seat now is held by Republican Robert Schenck. Schenck, who is ineligible to run in 2014 due to term limits, defeated Rocco in the 2012 race for the seat.

David Welch, a Democrat and president of the Hernando County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, joined the race last fall. Republican Blaise Ingoglia, chair of the Hernando County Republican Executive Committee, in May announced he would run for Schenck's seat.
