BROOKSVILLE - An art auction and gala, planned for the heart of Brooksville's Founder's Week, will benefit the less fortunate members of Hernando County.
Volunteer Angela Gilbert said Building a Foundation, a nonprofit group started in 2011, is all about empowering the homeless and underserved members of the community by pairing them with local services.
"Accountability, that's a big thing we want to see going on," Gilbert said. "We want to give our clients a hand-up, not a hand-out."
Gilbert said the grass-roots organization is staffed with a handful of volunteers, including a social worker, who help individuals such as single mothers or homeless veterans get the services and support they need.
Building a Foundation does street outreach, Gilbert said, and relies mainly on referrals.
Building a Foundation has partnered with the city of Brooksville to host an art auction and gala, planned for Friday evening at Brooksville City Hall. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit group.
Local artists have donated their works to the auction, and their pieces are already up on display at the city hall gallery. Local businesses have donated food and drinks for the appetizer bar and wine tasting.
A solo jazz saxophonist is lined up for entertainment, and dress is semi-formal.
"It will be a good time, and an opportunity for ladies to dress up a little bit," Gilbert said.
The Building a Foundation 2013 auction and gala will be held from 6-10 p.m. Friday at Brooksville City Hall, 201 Howell Ave. Tickets can be purchased for $35 by contacting Angela Gilbert at (352) 403-7003 or Patricia Miller at (352) 942-9539.
