HCSO: Jail deputy arrested on aggravated child abuse charges

Published:

SPRING HILL - A detention deputy who works at the Hernando County Jail was arrested Friday night after sheriff's investigators accused him of intentionally burning a 3-year-old child with a hair dryer.

Deputies said Cody Marrone, 21, was punishing the boy by burning him with the hair dyer on various body parts, including his genitals. Marrone said he did so because the child would not let him sleep, deputies reported.

At about 4:30 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to Spring Hill Regional Hospital where medical staffers had determined the toddler's burns did not appear to be accidental.

Marrone initially told investigators the boy's injuries were self-inflicted, deputies said, but later changed his story.

Marrone was arrested at the Forest Oaks Boulevard sheriff's office substation, sheriff's records show. He is charged with aggravated child abuse and child neglect, and was released from jail after posting $20,000 bail.

Records show Marrone makes $39,401 annually.
