Hernando man faces theft charges after taking girlfriend’s car, deputies say

A 24-year-old Weeki Wachee man faces grand theft charges after deputies say he took his girlfriend’s vehicle on Saturday without permission.

Joseph Vincent Giovinazzi was being held at the Hernando County Detention Center on $2,000 bond.

A woman called authorities at 12:50 p.m. Saturday to report her boyfriend took her 2007 Volvo S60 without her permission. She said Giovinazzi has no driver license so she never lets him drive the vehicle, deputies said.

After Giovinazzi took her vehicle on a previous occasion, the woman told him she would call authorities if he did it again, according to a report by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman informed authorities at 3:31 p.m. Saturday that Giovianazzi returned the vehicle.

When a deputy questioned Giovianazzi, he said “That’s my girl. I just take it. I don’t have to ask,” according to the report.

On the way to jail, Giovianazzi asked deputies “Isn’t there a lesser charge than grand theft auto because I had her keys?” Latter, he said the woman would drop the charges because she is pregnant with his child, according to the report.
