A Hernando County Jail inmate was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer Sunday while in a lock down cell.
A deputy was conducting a security check on Justin Fugate, 21, when the inmate began cursing and yelling at him.
When the deputy asked him to calm down and have a seat, Fugate charged the cell door and then spit at him, a sheriff’s report said.
Fugate later told deputies that he spit in the direction of the deputy out of defense. He stated he was “feeling harassed,” the report said.
According to court records, Fugate was jailed in February for failure to appear in court on a battery charge stemming from a September 2012 incident.
