K-9 sniffs out drugs during traffic stop in Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE -

A Homosassa man was arrested early Tuesday morning after a traffic stop found him driving with a suspended license, and a K-9 sniffed out methamphetamine in his van, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

When Nicholas Fugate was pulled over at Broad Street and Turkey Trot Lane, he told the deputy he did not have a valid license.

After Fugate was issued a traffic citation, a K-9 unit was called to the scene, and the dog alerted his handler to the side door. Inside, deputies found a backpack with a broken bong in it, and a small plastic bag containing methamphetamine was found near the floorboard.

Fugate posted $750 for two charges of drug equipment and a driving with a suspended license charge Tuesday afternoon.

Hernando court records show Fugate was adjudicated guilty in 2004 on a driving with a suspended license charge and fleeing to elude law enforcement; in 2007 of possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia; and in 2009 on two possession of a controlled substance charges and a possession of paraphernalia charge.
