Man steals spoons to shoot up in Wal-Mart, deputies say

Published:

SPRING HILL - A 33-year-old Spring Hill man was arrested Wednesday after stealing a set of stainless steel measuring spoons and using them to shoot up in the Wal-Mart bathroom, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

An arrest affidavit shows a loss prevention officer at the 13300 Cortez Blvd. store saw Richard Hanshaw remove the spoons' packaging and put the set in his pocket. Hanshaw then paid for diabetic needles at the pharmacy, and went into the men's bathroom.

A used syringe was later found in the stall.

The deputy later overhead Hanshaw tell his girlfriend he "made a stupid mistake by stealing the spoons," the affidavit shows.

Hanshaw, who was sentenced to two years probation in November on grand theft charges, was arrested on charges of petit theft (three or more offenses) and violation of probation. He was being held on no bail.

Court records show Hanshaw has also been convicted of driving with a suspended license, battery and providing a false name to law enforcement.
