SPRING HILL – Two Spring Hill men were arrested Tuesday after taking $3,400 from Steak ‘n Shake in Spring Hill, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrest reports show that AJ Clark Lamagno, 22, asked Tomas Mercado, 47, to drive him to the restaurant at 4305 Commercial Way so he could steal money from the safe in the office.

Mercado offered to be the get-away driver, deputies said.

Both men once worked at Steak ‘n Shake and knew the code to the safe, deputies said.

While Mercado chatted with the cook, Lamagno walked in, went to the bathroom and was able to get into the cash office. He opened the safe, and took out two envelopes containing a total of more than $3,400, deputies said.

Lamagno left out of the back door, triggering the alarm, and Mercado picked him up, according to the report.

Lamagno later said he just went into Steak ‘n Shake to use the restroom, but Mercado told deputies he took Lamagno there so he could steal money from the safe, and to admitted to driving him away from the scene, according to the report.

Mercado was arrested on charges of burglary of an unoccupied structure and grand theft. He was being held on $7,000 bail.

Lamagno was arrested on the same charges, as well as possession of marijuana, cocaine and drug equipment. He was being held on $15,500 bail.
