SPRING HILL - The Hernando Sheriff's Office released more information Thursday on the shooting and standoff that occurred Tuesday in Spring Hill.

Law enforcement believes Thomas Brocato, 58, shot his neighbor, William Stelling, in the chest and stomach before barricading himself in his home at 13085 Siam Drive.

Several hours later, Brocato was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found covered in gasoline.

Stelling remains in critical but stable condition at Regional Media Center Bayonet Point.

Stelling was found on the floor by his front door. He told deputies he heard a knock on his front door, and when he answered it, Brocato shot him through the screen door.

The Sheriff's Office tried for hours to make contact with Brocato in his home. After shooting tear gas in the house, a SWAT team entered and found Brocato dead.

The entire home was doused with gasoline.

Detectives later found three assault rifles, nine other firearms and between 10,000 and 12,000 rounds of ammunition.
