Moton Elementary kindergartners learn about Mother Nature

BROOKSVILLE - Brooksville Garden Club members and Hernando County Master Gardeners volunteered time Thursday morning to teach Moton Elementary School students how to care for plants at the school's garden.

The students in Diane Kennedy's kindergarten class were given shirts to wear, which they turned up like pouches to carry and pour wooded mulch around plants to prevent erosion.

Wynn Miller, of both gardening groups, asked the class if anyone knew what erosion was.

"It's so the water doesn't swoosh the plants away," one student said.

Richard Stratton and Sherry Pedonesi helped students properly place the mulch which, having come from plant-life, was a fitting example to teach the students about "recycling."
