BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County School District will decide this morning who will be the next principal at Explorer K-8 for the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

School Superintendent Lori Romano said a committee reviewed a list of 12 applicants for the Explorer K-8 principal slot and were interviewed by administrators and district-level staff.

That list was refined to three final applicants, Romano said, who were interviewed early this week by Romano, Director of Business Services Heather Martin and assistant superintendents Sonya Jackson and Ken Pritz.

The district declined requests to provide the names or backgrounds of the finalists due to the tight hiring deadline needed to fill the position before the school year begins.

The district decided Wednesday afternoon to hold follow-up meetings with two of the three candidates, which were held yesterday, Romano said.

"We will make a decision by (Friday) morning," Romano said.

Martin said the district will make an announcement about the new hiree by the beginning of next week.

The principal position opened in May after principal John Stratton was selected to be principal of Central High School. The position has been occupied on an interim basis by Marvin Gordon after Joe Clifford stepped down last December.

An advertisement for the Explorer K-8 principal position, still posted as of last week, has since been removed.
