BROOKSVILLE - Shannon Bonessa will spend the next 15 years in prison for sexually battering a minor.

Bonessa, 43, was arrested on Feb. 25 and has remained in the Hernando County Jail ever since.

Assistant State Attorney Erin Daly said Bonessa cooperated with law enforcement after his arrest, and admitted to taking the 17-year-old victim to an abandoned house, giving her wine and having sex with her, knowing she had a mental problems.

The pair were spotted walking along Spring Hill Drive the next day, Daly said

Bonessa was charged with multiple counts of sexual battery on a mentally defective person and unlawful sexual activity with a minor and faced a maximum of 90 years in prison and $40,000 in fines if convicted.

The Brooksville man pleaded guilty to the charges. The plea agreement will designate him as a sexual predator. He has 157 days of credit time served.

"Don't have sex with kids in Hernando County," Daly said, when asked what the public should know about this case.

Court records show Bonessa was adjudicated guilty of grand theft, trespassing and burglary in 2010, and sentenced to 11 months and 29 days in the Hernando County Jail. Bonessa has been found guilty of other felony and misdemeanor charges in the past.
