Sheriff Al Nienhuis announced Friday that a 17-year veteran of the force will be promoted to lieutenant effective on Sunday.

Sgt. Andrew Batchelder has worked as a traffic sergeant since 2001, and his new position assigns him to the patrol division’s operational support.

Batchelder is a graduate of Springstead High School and Pasco Hernando Community College. He is working on his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. Leo University.

In the past, Batchelder has been named deputy of the quarter, and awarded ribbons and certificates of commendation.

“Lt. Batchelder is a great example of what it takes to make it to a position of responsibility in the Sheriff’s Office,” Nienhuis said. “He has a stellar work ethic, represents the sheriff’s office on the honor guard, and has shown a true commitment to the citizens of Hernando County.”
