BROOKSVILLE - Sheriff Al Nienhuis announced Friday morning the death of K-9 Ike.

Ike, the four-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd, began convulsing Thursday while on his way to a call with his handler, K-9 Deputy Brandon Cox. Cox took Ike to Animal Emergency of Hernando Inc. on Deltona Boulevard for emergency surgery. Ike did not survive the procedure, according to the sheriff's office.

Cox and Ike worked as a team for three years.

The sheriff's office said a memorial service for Ike is being planned and asks residents to keep Cox, his family, the K-9 unit and sheriff's office in their thoughts and prayers.
