Ask any savvy small-business owner to reveal their secrets of success and you might hear various answers. Niche marketing, competitive pricing and dynamic customer service are among the common themes successful businesses share. Creativity and adaptability are also high on the list, particularly during difficult economic times.
Glenn Balogh would add spiritual foundation to his list of reasons why Balogh Pest Control has been in Hernando County for 22 years. In fact, he credits, in part, a pyramid of success that he learned in a leadership seminar years ago that impacted how he has lived his life since.
"I put God first," he said. He doesn't preach, just matter-of-factly states what set his life on track as a young teenage boy when he discovered the church. No huge epiphanies or stories of dramatic healing. Just a child who discovered on his own the importance of believing in a higher power.
And he mapped his future around that revelation.
For Balogh it's not all that difficult to understand why the company he started in 1991 is solid in its customer base.
"Treat people right and they don't just come back, they tell their friends," he said.
Possessing a solid work ethic, Balogh has run his company with integrity and a foundation that attracts good people to his team. Most of his technicians have been with him for years.
"I treat them right," he said. "I pay overtime, vacation time and for their uniforms."
And he encourages them to seek higher education, making Balogh one of the few in the county that operates with all their significant licenses.
Balogh also credits his upbringing for instilling in him his solid grasp on family values. His parents were married 45 years and he and his six siblings were raised to believe they could achieve anything if they lived an honest life. And he molded his own parenting style to reflect those same messages to his own children.
Pest control is big business in Florida. But getting to the top and staying there with such fierce competition takes strategies that work. The industry has received its share of negative pokes, forcing legitimate companies to overcome stereotypes and earn the community's trust.
Balogh Pest Control has a reputation of excellence because of Balogh's high standards.
"My name is very important to me," he said, "and I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize that."
He also engages in similar tactics to run his personal life, which is a direct identifier of who he is internally.
Balogh has an ability to engage immediately with his customers and colleagues. His show business background might have at least a little to do with that ability to put his customers' minds at ease. He is an articulate communicator and delivers a message of trust and integrity with a little gentle spiritual bonus.
A 1982 Hernando High School graduate, and a popular baseball athlete, Balogh maintains a strong connection to his high school experience. He often hangs with past players and even coaches baseball for some of the children of his former teammates.
Those unbroken ties to affluent members of the community have served him well and helped build a name and reputation for his business.
While baseball seemed to be his passion, meeting the daughter of a pest control company not only introduced him to the church but also helped him get his first job in the business at just 16.
By 19, he said he was the youngest technician to be state-certified in pest control.
He started Balogh's Pest Control out of his home 22 years ago and purchased his first truck, a 1992 Sierra that he still owns. He added additional trucks as business picked up and put on technicians when he could afford to pay them.
Balogh has always run his company completely debt free, expanding only when he could afford to take on additional equipment. Therefore, Balogh's was never burdened with the pressures that plague many small businesses trying to stay afloat during the critical first few years when building capital is paramount to survival.
The company moved to its present location at 5041 Trieman Blvd. in Ridge Manor 10 years ago and continued to build on the values Balogh set in the beginning.
Balogh's Pest Control is a full-service termite, pest and lawn care company. They cater to both residential and commercial accounts and work with spot treatments, monthly and bi-monthly contracts.
"We have a solid Christian foundation," he said. "I'm honest in business and stay true to God's word."
