Spring Hill gas station employee arrested for theft

Published:

SPRING HILL - An employee of BP Kangaroo Express on Spring Hill Drive was arrested on charges of grand theft Monday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Cody Smith, 24, is believed to have taken $2,020.30 worth of cash, food, drinks and cigarettes from the company between April 15 and May 16.

A loss prevention officer from the company said he had collected video surveillance and copies of voided transactions, and that Smith gave the company officer a written confession.

The evidence was handed over to the sheriff's office. After his arrest, Smith told law enforcement he started stealing in April because he "became homeless and was needing rides to work," according to the affidavit. Smith added he continued stealing because he "felt he was not going to get caught."

Smith is being held on $2,000 bond.

Court records show Smith had his adjudication withheld in a 2008 case of possession of marijuana.
