Spring Hill man charged with assault on deputy, authorities say

Published:

A Spring Hill man faces charges of assaulting a deputy after trying to fight authorities who responded to a domestic disturbance at his home, deputies said.

Johnathan Jay Southard, 42, was also arrested on charges of assault, resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct, after the Saturday incident.

Southard was intoxicated when he returned to a home he shares with his girlfriend and began screaming profanities and threatening to destroy the interior and exterior of the home, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, Southard told them that he is on probation for assaulting a law enforcement officer, deputies said. He refused orders from deputies to step back and sit down, raising his fists and advancing aggressively towards a deputy, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies placed handcuffs on Southard, but he continued to resist and had to be escorted through the home, off the property and into the patrol car, the report said.

He was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center and was being held without bail.
