SPRING HILL — A 22-year-old man, angry that he couldn’t use a family vehicle, hit his mother in the legs with a broom stick and punched her in the head and face Monday, a Hernando County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Michael Anthony Leonard was arrested Monday morning and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the report said.

Leonard told an investigator that he would never touch his mother, but she had an abrasion on her right leg and the right side of her face and neck were red, records said.

Leonard was being held in the Hernando County jail on Tuesday with bail at $2,500. He is ordered to have no contact with his mother, records show.

In September 2010, Leonard was arrested in Hernando, and later found guilty, for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, records show.

The following month, he was arrested on charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, battery, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and violating probation, records show. Leonard was found guilty of those charges in 2011, records show.
