BROOKSVILLE - An early morning fire has closed the East Hernando Branch Library until further notice.

According to Hernando County government spokeswoman Brenda Frazier, Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to 6457 Windmere Road just past 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Frazier told Hernando Today later on Saturday that the fire started in a screened porch area in the back of the library.

Frazier said she has yet to be told how extensive the damage to the library is, but did know there was smoke and water damage from the blaze and sprinkler system.

"It is suspicious, that's why the sheriff's office and state fire marshal are involved," Frazier said.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, a library employee met patrons in the parking lot, explaining the library was closed until further notice and collecting book returns.

Frazier said staff are already "working to remedy the situation," but added that patrons can return books and other materials to other county branches.

The closet branch is the main library, located at 2308 Howell Ave. in Brooksville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.
