BROOKSVILLE - Virginia Singer is the county's new public information manager.

She replaces Brenda Frazier, who is retiring Sept. 27 after 37 years with the county.

Singer, one of 33 people who applied for the job, said she is honored to have been selected and is excited about joining county staff and serving the public.

She has worked for the Southwest Florida Water Management District for the past 13 years as the senior communications coordinator where her duties included designing and implementing strategic communications plans and serving as project manager for public information and education projects.

"I will be transferring many skills I've developed here (at the water management agency) over the years, as well as gaining some new ones," she said. "I am looking forward to it and I have deep roots in Hernando County."

Singer said she has not set a resignation date yet from her current position but will allow herself plenty of time to touch base with Frazier before the latter leaves.

"I have a lot of respect for Brenda and I'm going to be meeting with her and she will be catching me up to speed with where I need to be when she's gone," she said.

Frazier made $66,000. Singer's starting salary is $63,500. She made $53,200 with the water district.

"Virginia has a strong background in public sector communications, experience with public and customer relations and a thorough knowledge of our community," County Administrator Len Sossamon said in a press release. "I believe she will be a great asset to the county's team."

As public information manager, Singer's duties will include communicating with the news media, coordinating public outreach initiatives, tracking progress on the county's recently approved strategic plan and facilitating public relations for the county.

Her first day on the job will be Sept. 30.

"Virginia and I will be spending some time together between now and the time I leave to acquaint her with some of the basics of the job and the many nuances of county government," Frazier said.

There are seven Singers working in various departments in the county. Six are siblings and one is an in-law.

The family includes Donnie Singer, executive director of the Hernando County Housing Authority; Donna Singer, site plan review coordinator; Elaine Singer, finance manager with the transportation department; Jodi Singer, operations manager with the development department.

A Brooksville native, Singer is a Hernando High School graduate and earned her bachelor of arts degree in communications from the University of South Florida.
