Swimmer finds surprise waiting for him at end of pool - his mom

Michael Hitt, seventh-grader at the new charter Gulf Coast Middle School, received a surprise visitor during his Thursday morning Field Activity Day at the YMCA pool: His mother, Somer Struhar has been stationed in Afghanistan since last October.

As Hitt swam the length of the pool, Struhar waited at the end of what may have seemed like the longest yard for this young man.

Hitt emerged for a breath of air, to hear Lee Greenwood's, "God Bless the USA" and the applause of classmates, teachers, YMCA staff and water aerobics attendees.

Hitt opened his eyes to see his mother standing at the end of his swim lane.
