Weeki Wachee man charged with squeezing wife's neck

WEEKI WACHEE - A retired Weeki Wachee man was arrested Friday and charged with squeezing his wife's neck, deputies said.

Hernando sheriff's deputies say Alvin Saul Bennis, 65, was seated in a chair in a common area outside the apartment he shares with his wife when she began speaking with him.

Bennis told her to leave him alone, according to an arrest report, but Bennis said she would not.

According to Bennis' wife, she was attempting to get to a bag with beach towels next to him when Bennis grabbed her by the right shoulder, and moved her back towards the apartment, and told her to leave him alone, the report shows.

Bennis' wife said he squeezed the base of her neck and shoulder very hard, which caused her pain, according to the report, and a deputy did see a large red area where she described.

Bennis told the responding deputy that he did grab his wife, but claimed it was by the arm and sweatshirt when he pulled her towards the apartment, according to the report.

He was taken to Hernando County Jail, charged with domestic battery, and held without bond.
