Woman sets fire after being evicted, deputies say

Published:

SPRING HILL - April Evans, 43, was arrested on arson charges on Tuesday after setting her apartment on fire, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

When a sheriff's deputy went to the 4094 Jason Road home to serve Evans with a final eviction notice, he noticed smoke coming from the apartment, which is part of a quadplex.

Hernando County Fire/Rescue later found smoldering rags in a bathroom sink, the report shows.

The State Fire Marshal ruled the fire an arson, and found the smoke detectors had been ripped out of the ceiling.

Detectives learned Evans was in the apartment right before the deputy arrived, and she told neighbors and her landlord she intended to set the building on fire. Evans left messages advising the property owner he "better have insurance," the affidavit shows.

Evans was located Tuesday, and told detectives she lit several pieces of paper on fire and used rags to extinguish them. Evans said she did threaten to burn the building down, but only because she was angry, deputies said.

She was arrested on first-degree arson charges, and was being held on no bail.

Court records show several domestic violence injunctions have been filed against Evans this year.
