NEW PORT RICHEY - Despite competing on Friday the 13th, certainly no misfortune befell the Fighting Tarpons from Punta Gorda-Charlotte Friday night at the Jim Valentine Sports Complex.
The Tarpons chalked up a meet-best 11 placers, featuring eight medalists, to dethrone host River River in the fourth Disparti Invitational Weightlifting Meet.
In a meet where the top three placers in each of the 10 weight classes earned a medal, while the fourth through sixth placers walked away with ribbons - Charlotte lifters toted home three gold medals, three silver and two bronze medallions.
CHS totaled 52 points followed by three-time Disparti champ River Ridge (29), Loxahatchee-Seminole Ridge (24) and Nature Coast Technical (17).
Springstead finished in a tie for 10th with seven points while Weeki Wachee placed 13th with six points.
Though the three Hernando County squads failed to earn one gold medal, NCT returned home with four placers while Springstead collected three and Weeki Wachee had two.
The Hornets were paced by senior Amber Lake's second-place finish at unlimited.
Lake, who placed fourth here last winter with a 155-145-300 total, fashioned a 175-145-320 total to lose to Land O' Lakes senior Kelsey McKee's 175-185-360 meet-high total.
"The last couple times I was here I was real nervous," admitted the 17-year-old Lake, who celebrates her 18th birthday in a week. "I was still nervous today, but I felt good.
"I did best in my bench," said Lake, a 2013 All-County performer. "Today, I knew I had to blow it up. I thought I could finish second or third."
Afterward she added, "I've got a lot of work to do. I got a 340 total last year; I want to surpass that this year."
Another senior, Erin Moynihan, better known as the Lady Hornets' finest tennis player over the past three years, placed sixth at 129 with a fine 120-115-235 total.
NCT was led by a pair of silver-medal efforts by Alicia and Ashley Gentz.
Alicia Gentz, a 2011 state qualifier, placed fifth at 119 last winter in this meet. This time, Gentz was edged out for a gold medal by River Ridge junior Kiara Wood, 285-280.
"I'm OK with second," said the 17-year-old Gentz. "I got a higher total today than I did on Wednesday (270); my cleans were the difference."
On her focus beginning on Monday, she said, "I'd like to improve a lot more by districts. I'm OK with getting my first medal here."
For the second straight winter, sophomore Ashley Gentz returned home with a silver medal.
Gentz carved out a 125-145-270 total, 15 pounds behind Charlotte junior Marissa Beisner's 285 total.
"I'm OK with second, especially when I wasn't expecting to place here," pointed out the 15-year-old Gentz. "When I looked at the girls' totals, I was expecting them to go higher."
On what facet was working for Gentz, "I was pretty good in my bench and cleans," she said. "I'm happy with my totals and really I'm where I want to be."
Senior Rachel Crayton, who placed third at Disparti last winter at 183 with a 275 total, placed third again behind a 280 total.
Sunlake junior Catalina Valdes ran away with the weight class with a 205-140-345 total followed by Charlotte junior Haley Fox's 150-150-300 total.
Sophomore Annelise Rentas placed fourth at 139 behind a 265-pound total. Her seasonal-best was 255.
The weight class was conquered by Seminole Ridge senior Cheyenne Schenk's ridiculous 175-165-340 total.
"Today, I just wanted to do my best," explained the 15-year-old Rentas. "I stayed within my range - which is good. I thought I did real well with my cleans.
"I've got a little bit more time before districts. My goal is to close the gap on the leaders."
For the second straight winter, Springstead sophomore Kristina McCane placed fourth at Disparti. She did improve 30 pounds to a career-best 195 total.
Her weight class was captured by Charlotte's 97-pound senior Karen Frazile's unbelievable 135-140-275 total.
"It feels great to place again," said the 15-year-old McCane. "My cleans saved me for sure. It was nice to put up a good total after competing on Wednesday; I wasn't nervous at all."
Senior Ty'Rhonza Harris tied her personal-best 245 total behind a personal-high 125 clean-and-jerk total.
"I really wanted to get third. I actually tied for third, but lost the tiebreaker," noted the 17-year-old Harris. "I felt I did pretty good today. When I get back in the room on Monday, I've got to start working on my triceps to get stronger."
Junior Madeline Genuardi, who recorded a personal-best 285 total on Wednesday against Hernando, couldn't match it on Friday with a 275-pound total for sixth place.
"I know I could have done better," insisted the 16-year-old Genuardi. "I missed two bench lifts and two cleans. I'll admit I felt a little tired. It's been a long day."
