BROOKSVILLE -

Hernando Christian Academy will have to play out the remainder of the season without its top pitcher, senior Ashley McKay.

According to HCA head coach Mike Drummond, McKay tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during a March 22 game against Clearwater-Lakeside Christian.

The senior, now awaiting surgery, signed with Lake-Sumter State College back in January and will retain her scholarship, Drummond added.

A multi-sport athlete for the Lady Lions, she came into the week hitting a county-best .568 with five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 24 runs batted in.

On the mound, she was 8-2 with a 2.19 earned run average, striking out 137 batters over 64 innings.

Sophomore Chelsea Lowe will take over the pitching duties, earning the win for HCA (13-2) during Tuesday night’s 19-3 victory at Bayshore Christian.
