GAINESVILLE - Hernando High senior shortstop Christian Arroyo finished second in the balloting for the title of 2013 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Baseball.

The award, voted on by a panel of high school baseball coaches and media, was given to Plant City-Durant senior pitcher Tyler Danish.

Danish, who was 15-1 and did not allow an earned run all season, recorded 156 strikeouts in 94 innings with just 16 walks while offensively sporting an impressive .411 batting average with nine home runs, four doubles, 27 runs batted in, a .522 on-base percentage and a .756 slugging percentage. He led Durant to a state runner-up showing in Class 8A.

He was drafted in the second round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last Thursday by the Chicago White Sox, going 55th overall.

Arroyo, the 5A Player of the Year, hit .524, tallying 13 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs. He also drove in 35 runs and scored 42 times for the Leopards, who advanced to the Elite Eight for the fourth straight year.

Taken in the first round with the 25th pick by the San Francisco Giants, Arroyo was the first prep player drafted from Florida this year.

Danish accumulated 173 points in the final voting, including 13 first-place votes. Arroyo totaled 119 points and four first-place votes.
