Hernando's Goodwin qualifies for states

Published:

HUDSON - Wednesday afternoon, Hernando High weightlifter David Goodwin did something no other county weightlifter did in the Class 1A, District 6 Meet.

Goodwin won the 139-pound class at Fivay High's gym, and earned himself a trip to the Class 1A state meet April 25 in Kissimmee.

First-place winners advanced to states, but other lifters may qualify within the next week via at-large bids.

He won the county title but this victory means he is going to the "show."

Wednesday, he had a bench press of 245 pounds and a clean-and-jerk of 190 for a 435 total.

The Hernando senior wasn't real impressed with his bench press.

"It's not too bad," Goodwin said. "It will do. Sophomore year, I went to state and got last."

In this meet he beat out Zephyrhills' Thomas Burlinson, who had a 395 total.

The Leopards' coach was not surprised by Goodwin's work.

"Goodwin was the front-runner coming in and he performed well," said Hernando coach Mike Einspahr. "The totals are a little bit low but they are low across the board."

Austin Asher of Central was second in the 154 class. He had a bench of 235 and a clean-and-jerk of 215 for a 450 total.

Citrus dominated the meet, winning the team title with 58 points. Zephyrhills was second with 27.

Citrus had four lifters who won their classes. Kody McDow won the 154 class. He finished third at state last year.

Now, Goodwin can try for his own state medal.
