WEEKI WACHEE - It was a mixed bag of results for the four Hernando County wrestling programs involved at the conclusion of Saturday's two-day, 15-team Weeki Wachee High Duals Tournament.

For the second time in two years, the gymnasium's air conditioning failed to properly operate on Saturday and one team bailed out again at the last minute.

Last year, Ridgewood failed to show up for the event. This year, Hudson dropped out at the 11th-hour leaving one pool of teams competing seven times and the other six times.

Though none of the local teams reached the finals, six county grapplers finished unbeaten.

Unlike last year when the Venice Indians went unbeaten to capture the inaugural event, Venice and Gainesville High tied in the championship match at 34-all.

After 8 hours of competition on Saturday, it took an additional 15 minutes to sort through the tournament tiebreakers. On criteria "H" - most first points scored in a match -- the Hurricanes denied the Indians a repeat, 7-5.

The Alachua County mat men, who concluded the 49th Class 2A FHSAA Finals in Lakeland in 29th place, concluded this event 7-0. Venice, who placed 46th at 2A states, finished 7-1.

GHS senior Jon Gardner at 126 pounds was voted by the coaches as meet's Outstanding Wrestling.

Nature Coast Technical, which placed third in the inaugural event last season, finished 5-2 overall to place fourth.

The Sharks roared through Friday's opening round by blasting Ridgewood (54-15), Lake Wales (58-6) and Weeki Wachee (48-33).

On Saturday, NCT trampled Ocala-Trinity Catholic (60-12) and edged Citrus (43-33) before losing to Gainesville in its final pool bout (39-36).

By cross-bracketing in the final round, the Sharks closed out the meet falling to one-loss Crystal River (40-31).

Individually, the Sharks opened their 10th mat season capturing 58-of-77 bouts (75 percent) behind a county-best 28 pins.

Three Sharks departed WWHS unbeaten to open Hernando County's 41st wrestling season including: juniors Mark Espinosa at 120 pounds and Frank Ritchie at 195, and sophomore Anthony Contegiacomo at 220 - all behind perfect 7-0 won-lost slates.

Two other juniors - Jeramie Jazikoff at 138 and Le'Shaun Gray at 170 - both finished 6-1.

Despite the Sharks dropping their last two matches, 10th-year skipper Mike Lastra, who doesn't have a senior in his starting lineup, was encouraged with his young team's efforts.

"We didn't come in here with a full boat," explained Lastra on his team's 11-man lineup attempting to cover 14 weight classes. "Our (three) forfeits caught up to us against Gainesville and Crystal River. I'm not mad at all on how our kids did.

"Overall, we did well. Mistakes are commonplace in Week 1, but we wrestled with a lot of heart," noted Lastra, who saw nine Sharks finish with a .500 or better record. "I was pleased with how well we competed. Having three guys go unbeaten here is pretty good. I'm excited for all the underclassmen we have.

"I can't lie, we were hoping for a top-three finish, but we ran into a Crystal River team with a full boat."

On NCT's standouts, "Mark (Espinosa) has really set the tone in the room for us," declared Lastra. "We bumped him up a few times today and he really responded with a great tournament. I thought Frank (Ritchie), Anthony (Contegiacomo) and Le'Shaun (Gray) really stood out, too."

Espinosa, who finished 23-20 last winter, including a 3-3 mark at WWHS, excelled with a personal-best six pins.

"I felt pretty good," admitted the 16-year-old Espinosa. "The key was I came here confident and I kept working my tilt. My goal this year is to place at states.

"At this point, my cardio is pretty good, but I need to continue working harder on my top position."

Contegiacomo missed the Weeki Wachee Duals last year. This time, he finished with three pins.

"I thought I had two good days here," pointed out the 15-year-old Contegiacomo, who finished 18-17 as a first-year freshman last winter. "This year is a little different. Last year, I was at 195, now I'm at 220 - there are different styles here, so I have to move faster."

As far as the team's fourth-place finish, "We did well," he said. "We almost finished third. Coming in, we wanted to beat Venice and take first but that close loss to Gainesville hurt us. I thought I did OK, I'd give myself a 'C' and try to do better next time."

Ritchie, who finished 19-16 last winter with 12 pins, improved on his 4-2 mark of a year ago in the Hornets' gym. This weekend marked the first time Ritchie has pinned four opponents in a single tournament.

Like Contegiacomo, Gray missed last year's WWHS Duals. He completed his initial season at 13-5.

This time, he suffered his only loss at the hands of Citrus senior and 2013 state qualifier Casey Bearden. Bearden spoiled Gray's shot at his first undefeated tourney with a pin in 2:15.

"My cardio could be a lot better," shared the 16-year-old Gray, who is the nephew of former three-time Springstead state champion Corey Hill, who was in attendance on Saturday. "I thought the team did really well. We just gave up too many points (forfeits).

"It's a young team. Even though we made mistakes on Friday, we corrected a bunch today."

???Last winter, second-year Weeki Wachee finished 3-4 in its own event finishing ninth overall.

This time, the Hornets improved to 5-2 overall placing sixth.

WWHS opened the meet by thrashing Trinity Catholic (60-12) and solving Citrus (42-33) before losing to NCT (43-30).

On Saturday, head coach Joe Felice's mat men lost to Gainesville (48-24), then ripped Ridgewood (51-15) and Lake Wales (54-12) before losing to Belleview (45-28).

All told, WWHS grapplers captured 51-of-77 bouts (66 percent) behind 25 pins.

Two of last season's finest Hornets - sophomore Brandon Smith at 106 and senior Dante Padilla at 120/126 - each went 6-1.

This time, Hornet headliners included seniors Jesus Nieves at 132/138 and Anthony Vines at 285. The duo finished a combined 14-0, featuring a combined 11 pines.

Vines, who finished 21-13 last winter, improved on his career-best 6-1 effort in his backyard.

"Today was great," said the 18-year-old Vines, who topped his previous personal record of four pins in one meet with five. "I thought all the guys worked hard; we kept the pace alive. As far as the team, we only have a few returning kids, so we performed better than I expected. "

In evaluating his performance, "My cardio was good for this time in the season," he said. "But I've got work to do when I'm neutral; there's always room for improvement."

Nieves, a 2013 2A state qualifier at Central at 145, looked fit following his transfer to WWHS and 132.

"I thought I did pretty well," detailed Nieves, who finished 30-13 last winter including a 4-2 run at WWHS. "I pinned everybody (six falls) except one guy, so my new weight wasn't a problem. I wrestled subpar in my match against Belleview (a 10-0 major decision over Jared Burgess).

"I spent a lot of time mentally preparing for this tournament with my new teammates. I have to admit, I would have liked to have beaten Nature Coast and Gainesville, but both of those teams earned what they got."

In evaluating the tournament, "Besides the air conditioning not working that was the only real problem - and that's a county issue," detailed Felice. "Otherwise, we made a few dollars and there was a lot of great wrestling.

"That final was something. Give props to Gainesville, cause Venice is the real deal," described Felice, a former state qualifier from Springstead. "Venice is such a well-coached team. They do all the basics phenomenally.

"For us, we wrestled really well on Friday and were a little flat today," pointed out Felice. "Every bracket had a lot of competition. What pleased me the most was how aggressive we came out. On lessons learned, we've got to work harder on the bottom."

A year ago, the county's oldest mat program set a school record with 24 dual-meet losses - including a 1-6 performance at Weeki Wachee worth 11th place out of 14 teams.

A year later, the Purple and Gold finished 4-4 en route to an eighth-place finish.

On Friday, HHS topped winless Central (54-18) and Land O' Lakes (41-33) before Venice scalped the Leopards (69-6).

On Saturday, HHS bopped Lecanto (54-18) and Countryside (48-33) but fell to Belleview (42-36), Crystal River (53-11) and Citrus (60-24).

After going 34-42 at WWHS last winter, the Leopards captured 47-of-86 bouts (55 percent).

HHS was paced by junior Bailey Mosher at 120, who finished 7-1 with four pins. A year ago, Mosher finished 23-20 overall, including a 3-3 mark at WWHS.

Senior Brennen Ertl finished 5-1 with two pins at 160, but missed the team's final two matches after needing five stitches to close a wound suffered above his left eye.

Senior Sonnie Genberg finished 6-2 at 152, including a team-high five pins.

The results left a smile on the face of second-year skipper David Pritz.

"We showed improvement. We got half as many wins today as we got in all of last year, so that's a step in the right direction," said Coach Pritz, whose team did not have state placer Jesse Gaudin in the lineup. "We'll have Jesse and a couple of others when we wrestle next time. We've still got a lot of things to work on."

On Mosher's efforts, "Bailey had a great tournament," said Pritz. "He's one of those guys that gives us a 100 percent every time he's out there, whether its practice or in matches. The kid's a competitor.

"I'm so proud of how our guys fought. I know it's early but we've got the potential to be competitive - and that wasn't the case last year."

Central arrived at Weeki Wachee with the county's smallest roster featuring six grapplers.

The Bears, who finished 1-5 last winter at WWHS, were blanked this time dropping all seven matches they competed in.

The highlight was the effort turned in by senior Brandon Brown at 195. Brown, who finished 21-16 last winter, featured a 3-3 mark at WWHS.

This time, Brown finished with a team-best 7-0.
