Springstead sending four to state meet

Although not quite the result he was looking for, Springstead junior Bobby Harris reached the FHSAA Finals for the second year in a row after placing second in the high jump at the Class 3A, Region II Meet Wednesday at Tampa-Leto.

Harris cleared 6-6, finishing behind Jhony Victor of Celebration.

“I’m happy that I jumped 6-6,” Harris said, “but I would’ve rather jumped 6-8 and won.”

“The last two meets I’ve been at 6-2 and 6-4, so when I cleared 6-4 I thought I could go 6-6,” Harris said.

His goal remains to win the state championship. Last year Harris placed second after clearing 6-4. He jumped 6-9 earlier this year, the second-best mark in the state across all classifications.

At the regional meet he narrowly missed his attempt at 6-8, initially clearing the bar but nudging it on the way down.

Harris’ teammate Ricky Toth was second in the 800, running 1:56 with a late charge.

“I was really nervous,” Toth said, “but I knew I had it in me.”

After hanging near the back of the pack for the first lap, Toth moved up from fourth to second on the final straight. “I hit 150, 200 meters, and then I give everything I have left in the tank.”

Toth, who has been running track for only about a year, will be making his first trip to the state meet.

Ethan Kemp, also from Springstead, took the fourth and final state-qualifying position in the shot put with a mark of 48-3 1/2.

Quadavis Battle of Central took third in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles with times of 14.88 and 39.91, respectively. Both times were personal bests for Battle.

On the girls side, Springstead junior Wilena Little won the long jump, hitting a mark of 18-4. Little returns to the state meet, having placed ninth in the 200 last year, and 14th as a freshman.

She’ll be joined again at states by teammate Erin Blackwell. The sophomore earned her second state berth in the 800, running a fourth-place 2:22.73.

The 3A state meet takes place next Friday at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
