Morgan Kiloh made sure Hernando County's first appearance at states in five years lasted a few extra hours.

The Springstead senior, seeded 21st in the boys 200-yard freestyle heading into the Class 2A FHSAA Finals at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart on Saturday, worked his way up to 16th in the morning prelims.

That was good enough to qualify him for the final spot in the consolation finals that night. Kiloh recorded a new personal best with a time of 1:48.01.

"I'm surprisingly happy he made it. He's excited about it. We're all excited about it," Springstead coach Wayne Withington said. "He felt good. He had a great attitude going in.

"It's a huge accomplishment. It boosts his confidence."

Kiloh is the first county swimmer to advance out of state prelims since former Eagle Dan Barry placed fourth in the 100 fly in 2008. That was also the last time the county was represented at the state meet.

In the final, Kiloh again produced his finest time, finishing fifth in the race and 13th overall in 1:47.03.

Another Springstead senior, Monica Surrena, finished 23rd in the 200 free (2:01.28), an improvement from her 24th-place seeding.

Surrena additionally came in 24th in the 100 free (56.60), as the three-time Hernando Today Girls Swimmer of the Year capped her outstanding prep career.

"Monica did OK," Withington said. "She didn't beat her best time (a school-record 2:00.03 in the 200 free at regionals), but I'm happy and pleased with how she swam. She gave it her all. She advanced to 23rd from 24th, which was one of our goals."

Withington took over the Springstead program on the eve of the season three years ago, largely because he had coached Surrena on the club level.

"It tops our relationship off as far as how long we've been together," Withington said. "To finish it with her going to states was great for the both of us.

"I'm proud of Monica for what she accomplished in her high school career."
